Sometimes all we need to do is get back to the basics. For thousands of years our ancestors have been walking more, growing food, working the earth, going barefoot and even sleeping on the ground. They had a much deeper connection with the earth. A term called “grounding” or “earthing” has gotten popular lately due to its numerous studies on the health benefits of going barefoot. I like to think of the earth as a gigantic battery that can softly charge you. We are mostly made up of water and minerals which make us a good conductor. Humans are basically electrical beings which helps our blood to pump, heart to pump, and brain to work. By physically connecting your body to the earth, it gives the body many healing benefits.

Multiple case studies have shown research-backed benefits of grounding. Probably the number one benefit is the reduction in inflammation in the body and reducing pain. It has been found that grounding helps with better sleep, mood, immunity, healing, chronic pain, protection against EMF (electromagnetic fields), and helping with jet lag. In the book, Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever? Clint Ober explains we need a minimum of 30 minutes a day to ground to see any noticeable benefits. The best surfaces to ground on are soil, grass, sand, concrete, and unsealed tile & brick. By adding water to the surface, it will super charge the benefits – water in the sand, dew in the grass, and muddy dirt.

I noticed all the Amish girls and young children always went barefoot in our community. I started doing it also and almost immediately felt pain in my joints get better and my overall well-being. I even got my husband to do it too! Now it’s hard to keep shoes on him. Grounding is another simple, free, and easy way to improve your health. I tell everyone I know to just sit in a chair with bare feet outside in the grass and read. And if that is not up your alley, you can buy a grounding mat for bed or home.
