The 7 churches of Revelation.

Good Morning, Good Afternoon and/or Good Evening wherever you are. This is Rev Essie of New Birth Ministries. I wish you an early Happy, should I say “happy,” Memorial Day since we will be remembering those tomorrow who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. There is a special anointing for a person to become a Warrior and a Protector of their people. Israel had their military all throughout the bible so the military has existed a really long time. But! One fine day, we will war no more! Amen? ~ I pray that your day is blessed and if it doesn’t seem to be going that way…..Bless it yourself! God lives in you. He gave you His Power so use it! Get your Swords, a drink and a snack, and maybe a tablet and pen and sit back and I will delve into the Word right after we invoke the Holy Spirit.

Let’s turn our swords to Revelation Chapter 2

The Apostle John, after being on the Isle of Patmos writes to us the messages that Jesus gave him about the 7 churches. Note that Jesus identifies Himself in various ways at the beginning of each message to each church. Five churches received corrections, but two didn’t. Jesus is still speaking to the church today through His Apostles and Disciples with each Sermon that we preach as long as it is the unadulterated Word of God and not divvied up or changed.

The Seven Churches of Revelation 2 and 3

After the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Rome began to come down very hard on Christians. They became increasingly hostile. Allegedly every disciple was martyred for their faith except one and his life was far from easy. John was exiled to a rocky, inhospitable island called Patmos in which Jesus began to give him revelation in the form of visions. The entire book of Revelation (no – ’s’) is almost a cinematic profusion of colors, images, intimations, musical instruments and forms. Someone once described it as being “sheer magnificence of poetic power.” Another scholar stated that “Revelation contains as many mysteries as it does words.” I tend to agree. It’s prophetic insight is often confused with foresight which is the end of the world forecasts.

Some say that the Apostle John was having OBE’s (out of body experiences) we will never know. It is possible. I myself have had them. God can take you to a place where your body cannot go. Jesus’ messages contain words of encouragement and correction. His messages offer a promise to “him who overcomes.” They identify the struggles that Christians now face and teach us how to overcome. The Apostle John, after being on the Isle of Patmos writes to us the messages that Jesus gave him about the 7 churches. Some received corrections, some didn’t. Jesus is still speaking to the church through His Apostles and Disciples with each Sermon that we preach as long as it is the unadulterated Word of God and not divvied up or changed.

The Romans wanted to get rid of Paul’s religious influence so the banished him from society. Does this sound familiar to you? Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. They are still doing it today and it is getting worse by the day. Christians need to stand up, we have the power of God within us. The world should follow us not the opposite.

  1. First the church of Ephesus, the Loveless church.
    To the Church in Ephesus
    Rev 2:1  Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;
    Rev 2:2  I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
    Rev 2:3  And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
    Rev 2:4  Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
    Rev 2:5  Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
    Rev 2:6  But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
    Rev 2:7  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

Ephesus was a rich city. It was the gateway to Asia Minor and was located at a major harbor on the Aegean Sea and housed one of the Seven wonders of the Ancient World (a temple to Artemis.) Founded by Paul, this was the most prominent church in Asia Minor. Jesus said that he knew their works, labor and patience and how they could not stand evil. They also were keen on pinpointing fake preachers. One of my favorite words, “patience” is listed twice within 2 scriptures. It is important to have patience or long-suffering as the Word calls it. Jesus gives us the definition of suffering in the following scriptures:

Mat 19:14  But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Mar 10:14  But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

Luk 18:16  But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

He is telling them to put up with it, push their flesh and thoughts aside and let the little children through. He’s telling them not to sweat it. In other words He is saying, “It’s cool. Let them come.” To look up the word “suffer” in Strong’s Concordance, we will see that suffer “is aphiemi” pronounced “af-ee-ay-mee” which means to send forth, forgive, let alone.

In this instance in Revelation 2:2 He is sending the message to them that they are quick to forgive with their patience. Anger and unforgiveness wouldn’t give a church such great status as this however, they had one fault that needed to be corrected. They left their first love. Verse 5 He tells them that they have fallen and needed to repent or He will remove their candlestick out of his place. Jesus is the light of the World and we are to reflect Him. It’s not about us but Him. They hated the Nicolatans which He also hated which was good.

They knew the laws, the religious ways to do things but had forgotten the reason for the season…Jesus! It’s like playing football without your Quarterback. They were playing the game yes, but never winning, never getting victory. Their love had grown cold. Spinning wheels and getting nowhere. They were to go back to when they were first saved and enjoy their relationship with Jesus. The bible says that without love “Jesus” we are sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal. The Way of Love 1Co 13:1  Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
He tells them to repent. One thing my friends is that you do not want to leave your first love. Put Jesus first, always. There are 3 steps here: 1. remember, 2. repent and 3. repeat (your good works._

  1. Smyrna: The suffering church. Jesus always started out with “I know thy works.” God knows everything. He is omniscient. All knowing. He knows ours too.

To the Church in Smyrna
Rev 2:8  And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
Rev 2:9  I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
Rev 2:10  Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
Rev 2:11  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

Smyrna suffered persecution more than we are used to here in the United States. They refused to worship pagan gods. He tells them of the evil intent of satan, to cast some of them in prison and evil kill them. Jesus tells them that they appear poor but are internally and eternally rich via their faith in Him. Others may have moved into their place and pretended to be Jews but Jesus knows the true Jews. He said that these ‘new’ people are of the synogogue of satan. Imposters. Wannabees. There is no correction here for Smyrna and just as with Ephesus, He tells them to overcome. Smyrna is one of two churches that didn’t receive chastisement from Jesus. i tell you the same thing today, overcome! And how do we do that? By the Blood of the Lamb and the Word of His testimony. Jesus wants them to be fearless and faithful.

  1. Pergamos: The compromising church. To the Church in Pergamum
    Rev 2:12  And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;
    Rev 2:13  I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
    Rev 2:14  But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
    Rev 2:15  So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
    Rev 2:16  Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
    Rev 2:17  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

Pergamos was nicknamed ‘satan’s city’ because of it’s paganism an idolatry. Jesus speaking of the seat of satan most likely was used in that way due to the city’s Altar of Zeus built on the Acropolis. They yoked the Gospel with Paganism is what I am afraid that we still do today. The Gospel of Jesus today is a blend of what is to be with what is not to be. Instead of the World trying to follow us and be like us, we’ve interjected the world’s ways with God’s commandments. We’ve actually “dumbed down” the Gospel. The we wonder why we cannot smoothly run a country without sacrifice’s and death. The color of our skin, eye color and texture of our hair still baffles people. We tolerate other beliefs and wonder why the church has lost most of it’s power. We can strengthen ourselves but simply believing in ONLY what the Word says and not what these modern guru’s tell us. No, you cannot go to Heaven without Jesus or by thinking positive. You cannot ‘float’ your way to the Pearly Gates. There is one man on You Tube who is what I call a type of modern, reefer-smoking guru and it baffles me because when I see him speak on the camera, I could almost swear that he is floating. That young man is so high it looks like his body is swaying as he speaks. He is almost good but a good Christian can pinpoint the flaws. I am too knowledgeable of the Word of God to let him capture my attention. Whatever satan cannot curse, he will attempt to corrupt through compromise. Do NOT compromise. You will draw out antagonism to yourself by living holy as God is holy but isn’t going to Heaven and being able to see the New Earth while walking with Jesus worth it?
They held the Doctrine of Balaam who is the one who tried to get Balac to curse God’s people. Why would you follow a fool? What a city amen? We are to have the ministry of reconciliation by drawing people to Christ. 2 Cor. 5:18.
2Co 5:18  And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

  1. Thyatira – The adulterous church

To the Church in Thyatira
Rev 2:18  And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;
Rev 2:19  I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
Rev 2:20  Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
Rev 2:21  And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
Rev 2:22  Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
Rev 2:23  And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
Rev 2:24  But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.
Rev 2:25  But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.
Rev 2:26  And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
Rev 2:27  And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
Rev 2:28  And I will give him the morning star.
Rev 2:29  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Jesus once again, describes Himself as The Son of God who hath his eyes like fames of fire and his fee are like fine brass. If Jesus describes Himself as the Son of God, He gives us the right to be able to do so as well. Claim you title deed to your Heavenly future. You are the King’s Kid. No one asked if anyone else cared or not. Do you care about who would be upset about that? I don’t. The Father and I are one, I am the righteousness of God, I am a peculiar person, a Royal Priesthood within a Holy Nation of people who love and worship God.

The church at Thyatira did much charity and works but they tolerated Jezebel. The word once again uses the word “suffered” and what did we say suffer meant earlier? To put up with. Tolerate. It took one self-proclaimed “Prophetess” to corrupt the church. We have to watch out for those so-called Prophetesses (male or female) with no calling, but a partner like Ahab (male or female) to put them into leadership. They got a little backing and you can’t hit them in the rear end with a red apple! They hate the true men and women of God and will chase them as far as the East is from the West if they feel threatened by them in any way. They have to be the HJIC (Head Jezebel in charge) and will threaten your life if you go against her rules or don’t want to commit adultery with her. God gave her space to repent and she didn’t. During the Great White Throne judgement, she cannot say that God is an unjust judge. He gave her a chance. Once again, Jesus tells them to overcome by listening to Him and doing His will.

  1. Sardis: The Dead Church
    To the Church in Sardis
    Rev 3:1  And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
    Rev 3:2  Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
    Rev 3:3  Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
    Rev 3:4  Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
    Rev 3:5  He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
    Rev 3:6  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Sardis, the lights were on and people showed up but the Holy Spirit didn’t. They had all of the makings of a good church but no Holy Power within. They were like what we still have today, Christians in name only. People say, “Yes I am a Christian” but don’t attend the sanctuary, meetings, gatherings, house bible studies, online bible studies, giving, tithing, fellowship, nothing. They don’t even pray or even pray before they go shopping or before eating. They quote the Bible but don’t even know what it means. They know what is called the Lord’s Prayer but don’t have one of their own. There are some Jesus says that had not defiled their garments and be clothed in white raiment.

Never fall away from the Doctrine of the Apostles. They lived rough lives trying to be good examples for us today. I believe that they are in Heaven watching us, rooting us on and praying for us. Make them proud. The bible says that when we die we are ushered to Heaven by Angels.

Luk 16:22  And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
Notice that the beggar was carried by Angels but when it came to the rich man he simply “died and was buried.” Where else would Jesus’ Best Friends be? He calls us friend as well. You are His best friend. You fit in with the best, my friend!
Joh 15:15  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

We as Christians must be supportive of the faithful, be submissive to the Control of the Holy Spirit, and repent. I believe that we need to support one another more. It shows the World that we are not blind and we do care for one another.

  1. To the Church in Philadelphia
    Rev 3:7  And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
    Rev 3:8  I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
    Rev 3:9  Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.
    Rev 3:10  Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
    Rev 3:11  Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
    Rev 3:12  Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
    Rev 3:13  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Jesus once again introduces Himself. Notice, this is the second instance that Jesus has proclaimed that there are people who ‘say’ that they are Jews but are not and He will make them of the synagogue of satan. This happened in Smyrna (and now Philadelphia) too if you remember. I’ve heard the story of how Turks came and ran out the true Jews and copied their mannerisms but I’d have to do more study on that one. There are so many battles over who is the true Jew and who is not. It’s terrible how this is separating people. Aren’t you glad just to be “grafted in?” I am.

They kept His Word and did not deny His name which shows us today that it is doable. We have to stop being crybabies talking about how we are persecuted at work and in our communities for being believers. The Church of Philadelphia did it over 2000 years ago when Rome was haunting believers and we can as well. They had little strength but strong faith. Jesus said that He is going to prevent them from experiencing the hour of temptation which will come upon al of the world. Bless God, that is a blessing to their church or as we call it today, their ministry. When we are weak, Christ is strong.

  1. To the Church in Laodicea – known as the Lukewarm Church

Rev 3:14  And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
Rev 3:15  I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
Rev 3:16  So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Rev 3:17  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
Rev 3:18  I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
Rev 3:19  As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Rev 3:20  Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Rev 3:21  To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Rev 3:22  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Laodicea couldn’t make up their mind. They were neither cold nor hot for the Lord and the Lord says that He wants us to make up our minds who’s side we are one. He said that He will spit us out of His mouth. They thought they were rich in need of nothing and that is a bad thing to do. We should be good stewards not greedy, selfish ones. Rich on the outside poor on the inside. Like the rich, young ruler who wanted to follow Jesus but wouldn’t leave his money.

Deut 8:18 NEVER forget Who helped us out of our poverty and troubles. God told them that they were wretched, and miserable and poor, blind and naked. Imagine this in a spiritual aspect. They had spiritual poverty. They had so much that they neglected to give God the Glory and Praise. He tells them to anoint their eyes with eye salve in order to be able to have spiritual vision. Just because we have eyes doesn’t mean that we can “see.”

He tells them to repent. He stands at the door knocking. He said that He will come in and sup with us if we answer. He will not force Himself on anyone. He went through the doors in the upper room with the disciples in order to comfort them, and still His presence wasn’t forceful. It was out of love. They were a team. He wanted to let them know that He was alright and that God is not a man that He should lie.

Jesus is presenting Himself to you today. He wants you to be on His team, will you accept?

Are you saved? Now is the time to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior. With all that is going on around the world, you need a friend. Jesus can be that special friend if you allow Him into your life. He is your helper and His Holy Spirit is your Comforter.
If you are not saved, just repeat the Romans Road after me: Say “Jesus, I repent of my sins, I am so sorry Lord. I believe that you died on the cross and rose 3 days later from the dead, just for me and I accept what you have done, I accept you as my Savior. Thank you Jesus, amen.” Now go find a bible believing, Holy Ghost filled church and learn of Him, it’s never too late. Your new life starts now. All old things are gone away. God throws them as far as the East if from the West. Now….go live, laugh and love!

Num 6:24  The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
Num 6:25  The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
Num 6:26  The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
Thank you for coming on today and I pray that your week goes by Victoriously!
Rev Essie signing off! God bless and have a great day!
