Luke 21:19 “In your patience possess ye your souls.”
James 1:3-4 “Knowing this, that the trying of our faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
A. What is patience: Steadfastness, endurance, constancy. It is a characteristic. It’s not what you do but that which is developed in you. To remain, tarry, persevere, abide, hold fast to your faith. It is a quality of self-restraint in the face of provocation which does not hastily retaliate or promptly punish. It’s the opposite of anger.
I. Hindrances:
a. Pride: 2 Kings 5:11-12, Naaman, leprosy, dip 7 times in the Jordan River. Acts 27:9- 12, Matthew 15:21-23
b. Weariness: Num 20:10-12, Moses struck the rock twice. Luke 9:52-56, 10:38-42, Martha was over-occupied and became weary. Anger results when people or circumstances do not perform to one’s expectations.
c. Un-forgiveness and revenge. Gen 34:25-27 Diana’s brothers killed a whole city over her rape.
d. Desires of the flesh. Ex 32:1, 21-24, 1 Jo 2:15-16
e. Fear and/or lack of faith. Ja 1:6-6. He 13:9, Lu 9:62, Acts 27:21-22, 29-34, 44.
