Dear Rev.Esther,
FACES OF CLIMATE ACTION You probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you stoves powered by manure are reducing carbon emissions.
And yet, methane stoves in India are doing just that: providing a cleaner burning fuel and saving time, money, and resources for rural families.
Through our “Faces of Climate Action” campaign, we have sought to share some of the most inspiring stories of EDF activists from around the world. And in India, Richie Ahuja, Director of EDF’s India program, is working with the Fair Climate Network to help families bring these unconventional stoves into their homes.
Manure (yes, manure) is converted outside families’ homes into methane, which is then pumped into stoves. For families in rural India, using methane powered stoves rather than wood-fire produces a healthier living environment — and protects the environment as a whole.
Families are protecting the lungs of their loved ones by eliminating dangerous soot that is produced by wood burning stoves.
The methane that would have been released directly into the atmosphere is instead digested through the stoves. And though burning it does release CO2, methane is 23 times more powerful at trapping heat than CO2.
EDF and the Fair Climate Network are working hand in hand with rural families to bring these stoves into their homes. EDF is committed to helping everyday people take charge of their own energy use.
The challenges that face us in combating climate change worldwide can, and do, seem insurmountable at times — but the faces and voices of a community can and will change the way we view energy usage around the world.
And through our Faces of Climate Action campaign, you can learn how people just like rural families in India are taking charge of climate change, even if just in their own homes.
Sincerely,
Heather Shelby
Action Network Coordinator
